Avatar (2009)
Avatar Plot Summary:
While you can say you know what to expect from science fiction/fantasy & adventure movie, you can hardly guess what Avatar movie is about. Breathtaking scenery, incredible creatures, star cast, most beautiful 3D graphics and deep, thoughtful message are there to immerse you into the fantastic world of Navi people.
The film mongers were nervously anticipating the release of Avatar. First off, it was claimed to have the best use of 3D effects. Next, it is written and directed by James Cameron, who has a long list of notable works under his belt including such iconic movies as The Terminator, Judgement Day, Aliens, Titanic and some others, so predictably it was going to be another iconic movie from the iconic film director. By the way, this was Titanic that has kept the leading position in the lists of highest grossers for as long as 12 years, until in 2009 it has been sunk by Avatar. While it can be quite easy to retell the plot of other movies, it can be a nearly impossible task to restore the unique, very bright and beautiful atmosphere of the movie by means of words. Still, let it be an attempt to instigate you to watching (if you haven't got a chance by now) this amazing, currently the highest grossing film of all times.
The people of the Earth are short of natural resources in the middle of the 22nd century. In order to find the alternative, humans decided to explore the nearest planets. They stopped on Pandora planet, a habitable moon with tons of unobtanium, an extremely valuable mineral, under it's mantle. However humans have to face Navi, the local tribe living right on the deposits of unobtanium, and convince them to share this mineral with people. Living in harmony with nature, they need nothing from people, so it's going to be a dainty task to get that mineral under the ground.
Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) is a head of the Avatar Program. The latter is aimed to create Navi-human hybrids who can be operated by humans but can live in Pandora's biosphere. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) has come to the planet to replace his twin brother and at the same time, being a wheelchair-bound invalid, to gratify his eager desire to earn enough money for the surgery and restore his walking ability. His mission was to find the way to persuade Navi so that they would let people dig unobtanium out from under the big tree before the soldiers come and drive the humanoids off the land.
Strange as it may seem but humanoids do have certain values and traditions and they are not about to change them for the sake of invaders. There is colonel Miles Qaritch (Stephen Lang), who would rather use brute force against those standing in his way than carry on negotiations. Qaritch promises Sully to restore his paralyzed legs in return for detailed information about Navi. It would not be that difficult if Sully weren't getting imbued with interest for those strange creatures. They turned to be much more intelligent than people thought they are. But there is still a mission to deliver and there is short-tempered Miles Qaritch waiting for a tiny hint of order to start the war for unobtanium.
There is hardly a movie without a romantic line with Avatar being not an exception. Living among Navi people in his avatar body, Sully falls in love with Neytiri, who was appointed to train him but who also managed to reveal him the beauty of Pandora's world and philosophy of Navi people. No wonder why Sully made his choice and sided Navi to resist the army of soldiers headed by ruthless Quaritch.
Avatar is an amazing, exciting, most spectacular action treat you will be enjoying for as long as 162 minutes! This is a shiny movie that sucks you in through the screen. Its incredible beauty and top-notch, flawless graphics will make you want to live in Pandora forever. This is the movie you would like it never end.
If you expect to find some thoughtful dialogues there, you will be frustrated then. This is not a drama movie to make you engross in deep philosophical speculations. This is a fantastic piece of film-making created to give the viewers immense cinematic experience, emotions and even goose pimples by delivering great message through breathtaking scenery.
