American Beauty (1999)

American Beauty is a classy film, which deserves to be called a masterpiece. Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) is an average American man trying to cope with a midlife crisis. With no one respecting him, he lost his taste for life. Suddenly he falls in love. She is a friend of his daughter, who also discovers some feelings toward him. Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari) treats him not like a loser and a fat man as everyone around him does, but a person with rich inner world. The joy for life is re-awakeing in his soul growing every day and allows him to feel the beauty of everything around him.

But what happens to Lester then? He realizes that a young temptress is so beautiful, desirable but so unattainable. Apparently, he doesn't deserve her, probably to bring himself up to her level Lester decides to start sport activity. Encouraged by his inner metamorphosis, he breaks up all his rules and starts a new life. He still remembers that time when he was young, with no family and household chores. So he returned to this lifestyle, bought a new car and began to tell people what he really thinks about them. He gets the wings but where will they bring him?

The genius of the director gives the viewers an opportunity to live through the film rather than to watch it aloof. If you simply slip into the movie, you will see a common everyday story. And if you look deeper and listen to the music, you will get the truth of what is hidden beneath the superficial glance. Great directing work, thoughtful script, lots of statements for quoting as well as for practicing in your life. Excellent camera work and simply superb acting talent of Kevin Spacey, who was also very convincing in The Usual Suspects and L. A. Confidential, the pictures that are also in the list of Top 100 movies.
